Healing your Body through Meditation (Gurbani)
Any disease is the manifestation of basically two factors, unhealthy eating and impure thoughts. This is aggravated by lack of exercise, worries, and lack of self control over five factors i.e Anger, Sex, Greed, Attachment & Pride. Our body keeps on giving us warnings for a long time, if this is not heeded to, one develops disease. Medicines are only a short term relief and suppressive in nature. As per Scriptures of various religions the above facts are fairly substantiated. I would quote from Shri Guru Granth Sahib since I belong to Sikh religion the following verse which summarize the reasons of one falling sick.
“ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰ ਖਾਨਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰ , ਜਿਸ ਖਾਧੇ ਤਨ ਪੀੜ੍ਹਏਯ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ|| (SGGS Page 16)
‘Baba hor khanna khusee khuar, Jitu khadhe Tan Pidhiye man mein chaleh Vikar.’
‘O Baba,(Guru nanak), the pleasures of other foods are false, eating them the body is ruined , wickedness and corruption enters into the mind.’ ( These foods are basically Taamas in nature like fast foods, rich with oil and condiments. These along with smoking and drinking invoke excess of passion and therefore harm the body.)
Also another reason for falling sick is the mental worries, fast paced lifestyle, work tensions, ego, conflicts and lacks of faith in the Lord. Gurbani mentions the following reason for it.
“ਪਰਮੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਤੇ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਵਿਆਪਨ ਸਬੇ ਰੋਗ , ਵੇਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਰਾਮ ਤੇ ਲਗਨ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਜੋਗ || (SGGS, Page 135)
Parmayser tay bhullian vi-aapan sabhay rog. Vemukh hove Ram te lagan janam vijog,
‘Forgetting the Lord, one gets afflicted by all kind of disease. Being attached to worldly attraction Lord is forgotten and thus there is separation from Him.’
Therefore what is the answer to Healthy living and healing the disease. Medicines are definitely not the permanent answer. It is Simple living, healthy eating, good exercise and meditation which keep a person healthy and contented. So what should be done? I again quote from Sikh scriptures the need for following a healthy routine, healthy food and meditation. One should start one’s day with getting up early, taking bath and start meditation.
“ਕਰ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਸਿਮਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਭਾਈ ਆਰੋਗਾ, ਕੋਟ ਬਿਘਨ ਲਾਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸ਼ਰਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਭਾਏ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ||” (SGGS Page618)
‘ Kar isnan Simar Parabh apna man tan bhai aaroga, kot bhigan laathe parabh sharna pargate bhaya Sanjoga.”
‘After taking bath, remember the Lord and your body and mind would be cured of all diseases.’
“A person with disease should meditate and pray to Lord. As per Sikh scriptures he can recite the Mool Mantra which is: Ik Onkar Sat Naam Karta Purakh Nirbhao Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajoonee Sahib bhang Gur Parsad.”
‘One universal Creator, The name is Truth, Supreme Creator, No fear, no hatred, Always there, Beyond birth, Self existent, By God’s grace.”
The sick person should listen to the following Shabad (or pray whatever religion he has faith)
“ਮੇਰਾ ਬੈਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ , ਹਰ ਹਰ ਨਾਮ ਔਖਾਦ ਮੁਖ ਦੇਵੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫੰਦਾ ||” (SGGs Page 618)
‘Mera baid Guru Govinda, har har nam aukhad mukh deve kate jam ki phanda.’
“Guru, the Lord of the universe is my Physician, He places the medicine of his Name into my mouth and cuts away the noose of death.”
Another disease healing mantara as per Gurbani is:
“ਤਾਤੀ ਵਾਓ ਨਾ ਲਾਗੀ ਪਰ੍ਬਾਰ੍ਹਮ ਸਰਣਾਈ, ਚੌਗਿਰਦ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਕਾਰ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਾ ਭਾਈ || (SGGS Page 819)
‘Tati vao na lagi Parbaharm sarnai, chaugirad hamre Ram kar dukh lage na bhai’
“The hot wind does not affect one who is under the protection of the Lord on all the four sides, the pain does not afflict him.”
If one cannot recite the Gurbani, one can listen to it as Listening also cures the disease.
“ ਸੁਣੀਏ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸ “ (Page 2 SGGS)”.”
“Suniye dookh pap ka Na Nash”
“Listening to Gurbani/Scriptures, all the Diseases and Sins are destroyed”
Summary. I am not a doctor and no authority on the subject. However I am writing from my personal experience. I had complaint of Angina Pectoris in 2003 and using all above methods I have kept myself fit with least of the medical interventions (No stents, no heart medications). I was then in the Indian Army which had yearly detailed medical examinations. I always got all the parameters in acceptable limits. In 2009 I retired from Army as a Major General in SHAPE-1 category. Later in between I did loose self control and had developed High BP and slightly raised levels of Sugar. By sheer Discipline , Healthy Eating habits, Exercise , Yoga and Meditation, I am feeling absolutely normal and my vital parameters are absolutely fine as per my age (over 64 years). So if these things can help anyone I would be more than happy.
