Wishing a Birthday to a Noble Man!

By on February 2, 2017

S Raghbir Singh is a noble man, I strongly think and feel. He is my cousin (my late aunt’s (father’s sister) son). He is eldest of six siblings (five brothers and a sister) and has spent his entire life in the service and welfare of the humanity. Today is his 75th birth anniversary and thanks to Face Book, I got reminded in time to wish him on the occasion.

He never got married due to reasons best known to him but I feel it was the urge to serve the people and to help his family being the main reasons for such a decision. He is a science teacher and retired as a headmaster of a High school. He taught his students with passion and zeal. He had been giving free coaching classes to weak students and many a times helped poor students even with the school and examination fees. A well respected man who sets a personal example in service and dedication.

He has been a father figure to his extended family too and has been guiding his brothers, nephews and nieces throughout his life. There were many tragedies in the family like untimely death of his two brothers and a nephew; but he has stood with his family like a rock. Raghbir does not keep a good health now and he had been suffering from minor ailments since long but his mental stamina and tenacity has kept him going all these years. Son of a medium land holding farmer, he was an advisor to his late father in resolving various family differences.

A God fearing person who has a routine like a true Yogi, he wakes up early in the morning says his prayers and then goes to a welfare school which he has opened for the poor sections of the society at no profit no loss basis and manages it with the help of likeminded persons. Though retired from the government teaching job about 17 years back, he has worked relentlessly in coaching and guiding thousands of students with a missionary dynamism and sense of purpose.

He has remained celibate throughout his life and devoted himself to the cause of poor, down trodden and needy students. In the present day world where many of us hanker after material gains, Raghbir has kept himself detached from any kind of temptations. He did not even take his share of his parent’s property and gave it away to his brothers. He is one of the unsung heroes of India who has worked selflessly throughout his life without seeking any recognition or award.

It was indeed a pleasure and a privilege to wish him on his 75th birthday and talking to him . No wonder such persons are carrying out a ‘Sacha Sauda’ (True Bargain).

I am reminded of a verse written by Guru Nanak Devji  the first Sikh Guru and which is recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) regarding definition of noble men;

“ਨੀਕੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ, ਸਚ ਸੌਦਾ ਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ” ||

“ Neekay saachay kay vapaaree,

Sach sauda lai gur veechaaree.”   ( Page 1032, SGGS). It means;

“The noble people are traders in truth,

They purchase the true merchandise, while contemplating in Guru.”

God bless him with good health and grant him strength to continue the noble job.
