Nectar of Life (Meditation)
“ਅਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਹੈ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਯੋ ਭਾਈ, ਜਿਸ ਸਿਮਰਥ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਭ ਤਹਿਖਾ ਬੁਝਾਈ “
” Amrit naam nidhan hai, mil peevahu bhaaee , Jis simrath such paaeeai sabh thikhaa bhjhaaee”
(Page 318, Shri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS, written by Guru Arjan Dev)
A verse from Sikh scripture Shri Guru Garanth Sahib , I liked it so much that I wish to share its essence with you. It implies:
” Name of The Lord (Meditation) is like Nectar which all can be consumed freely. Meditation has the following effects on us.
1. It cures the body of all the diseases.
2. Purifies mind and soul.
3. Removes hunger of accumulating excessive wealth (Greed), illicit sexual desire and false pride.
4. It is the best intoxicant which makes you happy, cheerful and keeps you in perpetual bliss.
5. A best anger management tool.
6. Brings peace and tranquility.
7. Promotes logical thinking which results in enhanced efficiency.
Thus Meditation in any form is a Panacea for various ills especially which prevail in the present day materialistic Society.
Teaching your Kids
It is very important to teach your children the value of hard work and groom them to stand on their own feet. I often see some wealthy parents who pamper their kids and make their life very comfortable by providing them with luxury cars, clothes and expensive gadgets. Such things generally lead to disaster as kids do not realize the value of money. They get into bad habits and also develop bad attitude. I might sound a bit old fashioned but life values, attitudes and ethics are so very important for the budding generation. So is the realization of hard work, dedication, humility and creation of niche value for self.
Even great Kingdoms fell because their Kings never put their heir to hardship and trained them with rigor. Great Sikh Kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (In India) vanished in less than 10 years after his death as he never trained his sons vigorously for their intended roles. His sons lived in luxury, lacked leadership and fought with each other and vanished in a very short time. The successful parents are those who can make their wards tough enough to face the harsh realities of life. Kids may not like you today but eventually would realize the value of your acts someday. It is truly said that ‘ Give him a fish, it would feed him today but teach him how to catch a fish, he would be fed throughout his life.’
Sat-Sang (True Company)
“What is Satsang?
Satsang may not be sitting in a religious congregation,
With mind wandering away and deceit in your heart.
Satsang is the company of a beautiful person, beautiful mind, beautiful object and a beautiful thought.
Satsang is attained by reading a good book, listening to a nice music or a poem which moves your soul.
Satsang is realized with the smile of an innocent child, fragrance of a flower, gazing at stars, sitting on a hill top with pure air fluttering past your face.”
Power of Silence
“When one is Silent, one listens to his inner-self,
Introspection results, doubts are shed,
Self improvement takes place,
One discovers one-self.”
‘When one is Silent, one listens to others,
Listening leads to being attentive,
Attention results being one to one with the Speaker,
Conscious/sub-conscious then gears up to study,
Not only the speech, but also the thoughts, manifestations
and body language of the Speaker.”
Power of the Positive Affirmations
I strongly feel that positive affirmations can bring in dramatic results. Whatever one desires strongly, one would definitely get. It only depends on a single factor i.e how strong or intense is your desire. Many of us are fickle minded and wander about our aim. When you decide on a particular course and move on steadfastly with firm faith on the Lord Almighty, regardless of your circumstances, the things are bound to happen. It may take time though as there may be initial hiccups and there may be numerous challenges. But the Lord Almighty would show you the path.
I would quote from Sikh Scriptures,
“ਜੋ ਮਾੰਗੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੇ ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਦੇਵੇ” (SGGS Page 681)
“Jo maangehi Thaakur apunae thae soee soee dhaevai”
“Whatever you desire and ask from the Lord, it is always given”
There are some pre-requisites indeed like, firm conviction, explicit faith in God, self confidence, steadfastness, ability to recoil from temporary setbacks, diligence and dedication. Remember Faith can move mountains.
I am writing this piece from my personal experience. Without bothering the readers with many details all I can say that, I started my life journey from a very humble beginning. Born in a Punjab village (India) in a family with very little means (with no silver spoon in my mouth) eldest of all the siblings, I had to struggle hard for various necessities of life. I had and still have tremendous faith on the Lord and always desired to reach high places. I did not know how, but was confident that He would show me the path. I tried for a competitive examination of National Defense Academy as a young boy of 16 years for becoming a commissioned officer in the Indian Army about 47 years ago and thereafter have not looked back. I was successful in all the top notch Army courses and exams and happened to retire as Major General (A two star General). After retirement I have worked in the corporate also for about five years.
I have had numerous challenges both in professional and social life, however Lord was kind to let me overcome these. My three children were taught the hard way of life with limited financial means and rigors of unsettled Army life. However with God’s grace, all are doing extremely well having done their post graduate studies. My two daughters and sons-in-law are again gifted persons with good education and good job in the Corporate. Two of my kids are settled in USA and one is doing well in India. I have dotting grandsons too and I keep impressing upon my Folks the humble message of implicit faith on the Lord and need for learning good values. At this stage of life I wish to spread my humble experiences across to the society so that such messages could be useful to some. Thank you and God bless!
