For the last couple of days, Indian TV is abuzz with the stories of one self acclaimed God-Woman called “Radhe Maa” She is in the news for very wrong reasons and is facing charges of be-fooling her gullible followers (who are plenty in number). She claims to be a deity whose touch (Hugs and Kisses) can bring good luck to her disciples. An ordinary and not well-educated Punjabi girl who shot to fame due to her miraculous powers (vouched by some of her favorites) and reportedly has amassed good wealth and material belongings. Earlier there were other God-Men in lime light like the type of Nirmal Baba who claims to bring good fortune to his followers by very strange and simple methods, like wearing a typical cloth or eating a particular dish etc. We often see these kind of shows on Indian TV channels and these are being regularly televised. The God-Persons being shown on these channels appear to have very high earnings, I wonder what they advise bring any succor to suffering people, or it is just pure publicity coupled with occasional coincidental fulfilment of desire of somebody that keeps such people ticking.
I am not in a position to offer any value judgement on these guys; may be they are endowed with some kind of sixth sense which they are monetizing for their personal gain. But the whole thing looks very murky and forces one self to go back to our basics (the scriptures), which do explain this kind of behavior of these God-Persons (men/women) . It is written in Sikh scripture “Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), “ ਰੋਟੀਆਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ “|| ” Rotian Karan Poore Taal” ( Every dance is aimed at earning one’s bread). It explains that such God-Persons behave in such a manner just to make a quick buck and the real suckers are the common gullible people. This reminds me of a Story from Sikh scripture, which is well documented and authenticated.
Excerpts from Janam Sakhi (Tales of Guru Nanak’s Life).
“Once First Sikh Guru Baba Nanak while on his travels came across a Yogi, who claimed to see everything and could even predict future. There was a huge congregation sitting around him. Many of them had problems at their home. Each person would walk to the God-Man and offer him money or gifts and pay respect. Thereafter the suffering person would ask him solution to his problems. The Yogi would close his eyes and chant some Mantras and then declare as to what would happen in future and how the problems of that person would get resolved.
Baba Nanak told his disciple Bhai Mardana that all this is fake as no one except God himself knows what may happen in future. Also no one can predict or peep into others lives unless he has acquired the status of a Braham Gyani ( Extremely learned Saint). Mardana was quite perplexed and asked Babaji as to how such a crowd had gathered there. Baba Nanak told Mardana to see what happens and walked towards that Yogi. Yogi asked Guru as to what was his problem. Guru requested him to find out as he claimed to see and know everything. Yogi then closed his eyes and started chanting Mantras. Guruji signalled to Mardana to hide Yogi’s Karmandal ( a pot like utensil) behind a bush. When the Yogi opened his eyes, he saw that his utensil was missing. He started shouting profanities and said that he would cast a curse on the person who had done this. Saint Nanak asked him as to why was he getting angry. If he could see everything including Future, he should know where his utensil was. Yogi realised his folly and admitted to Baba that he had no such powers and he was only earning his bread by cheating the gullible people.
It is true that none can predict your future, alone He ( Lord ) knows it.
It is clearly stated in Gurbani (Sikh Scriptures)
“ਥਿਥ ਵਾਰ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੇ , ਰੁਤ ਮਾਹ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ,
ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੋ ਸਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਸੋਈ ||”
“Thit war Na Jogi Jaane, Rut Mah Na Koi,
Ja Karta Sirsthi Ko Saaje, Aape Jaane Soi.”
Means, ” No Yogi knows about the Day, Date, Month or Season,
He who has created the Universe alone knows it” ( Pg 4 SGGS).”
Present day, so-called God-Persons are making a brisk business out of predicting future and deceiving innocent and gullible people. I am only amazed at the people who blindly follow such persons and lift these ordinary mortals to an exalted status.
