Some Thoughts: Being Faithful, Humility and Promise to my Children.

Being Faithful.

For any human being it is extremely difficult to be faithful and dedicated to his family and oneself. There are numerous wayside temptations where one can go astray as each of us has his weaker moments. It is with sheer discipline , steadfastness and self-control that one can prevent one’s mind from frivolous attractions. Such a person is a real Yogi. Once one has mastered this practice, he remains in a state of bliss. Like Saint Nanak said ” Man Jeetai Jag Jeet.” ਮਨ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗਜੀਤ ” implying that one who conquers himself, conquers the World.

Humility and Empathy.

Humility and Empathy are the hallmarks of noble men and the grace of their character. Many problems and personal conflicts would get solved if people follow these principles. I quote excerpts from Gurbani ( Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS )) to illustrate the point.

“ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੇ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਤਲੇ, ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬ ਗਲੇ ||”
” Sukhi Basse Maskeenia, aap niwar talle,
Bade bade Hankariye Nanak garab gale!”
“Maskeenia lived a happy life after conceding defeat, as haughty and egotist men have bitten the dust “

These lines are from Sukhmani Sahib (SGGS) and depict an interesting real story which runs as under:-
” There was a poor Brahmin who suddenly had guests and had no money or resource to feed them. A wrestling match was going on that day in the town and a famous undefeated champion wrestler called Maskeenia had thrown an open challenge for anyone to fight him for a big reward. There was a small consolation reward for the looser also. This poor Brahmin who was weak and no match to Maskeenia saw an opportunity to earn some money so that he could treat his guests. Even at the risk of getting hurt he challenged Maskeenia. The spectators were stunned to see an unequal challenge. Maskeenia realizing that the Brahmin must be having some financial problem and dire necessity to take such a risk, intentionally lost the wrestling match. Brahmin got the big reward, however Maskeenia’s name has become immortal in this world through Gurbani (Sikh scriptures).  Many high and mighty men who were haughty and proud have vanished in the history and no one remembers them. Indeed humility and Empathy are great Virtues of life.”

My Promise to My children.
” For as long as I live, I will always be your parent first and your friend next. I will watch you, lecture you, drive you insane, be your worst nightmare and hunt you down like a bloodhound when I have to, because I LOVE YOU. No matter what the circumstances are, I will always stand by you. I would know when you would have become responsible adult. You would never find anyone else in your life who loves. prays, cares and worries about you more than I do. If you have not muttered under your breath “I hate you” at least once in your life, I would not have done my job properly”
I have picked up this quote from an unknown author but I fully endorse every word of it and intend to follow it in letter and spirit.
