O Lord, I Seek the following.

I am not a very religious person in the ritualistic sense, I am a bit of rationalist. However I strongly feel and believe that there is an Abstract Power which is all-pervasive, omnipresent and highly decentralized consciousness residing in all of us; which some of us try to explore while many ignore it.

Today morning, when I got up, I started pondering as to what is the purpose of my life. Why do I feel restless when I see others behaving in a manner that I feel is not desirable? Why do I get jealous of others who have more materialistic possessions than me?  Why do I get put off when people try to show off? Why do I pray for well-being and prosperity of my own clan, is it not highly selfish? Is that Abstract power which is described by various names by various people only listens to those who call for his attention? Why do most of us are not satisfied with what we have and yearn for more? Why can’t I get rid of ego, greed, anger and attachment? Well I have tried sincerely number of times but somehow one gets back to square one. At number of occasions and functions, I behaved as a very humble person and a commoner but  others ridiculed and ignored me and commented, “ Oh do not worry about him . He is like that only, a no body”. Such comments force me to react and alter my behavior to raise my ego and show them that I used to be such and such ( I dislike narrating such stories which are on the lines that “ Once upon a time I was a King……… ). In fact, I feel miserable after such a behavior but what can I do, the environment forces me to act in this manner.

I have firm faith in the Sikh scriptures, though I am not very regular in visiting Gurdwara or following any rituals. In Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), the definition of the Abstract Power is given in a most logical, scientific and beautiful way and I like to quote,

“Ik-onKaar Sat Naam Karta Purakh Nirbhao Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajoonee SaibhaN Gur Parsad.” (Page 1, SGGS)

“There is but one God, True Name, Creator of the Universe and Creative Being Personified, Without Fear, Without Hatred, Beyond Birth and Death, Self Existent, Self illumine . By Guru’s Grace.”

These scriptures explain about this immense Self Creative Power which has the presence in all of us Humans as well as any form of life. A power which provides order to the entire Universe. Thus there is a need to understand and discover the part of Him which resides in us.

In the morning when I go out for a walk from my luxurious flat  I see children of construction laborer’s living a life of misery, without proper clothes, hygiene facilities and education facilities, I feel sympathy for them as they are also part of that Power. I then feel grateful to the Lord for all his benedictions like a good house and other possessions reasonable for comfortable sustenance of life. I then forget about the jealousy which arises in me seeing those having more worldly possessions than me.

I feel ashamed to ask Him for more. I thus modify my prayer and seek the following.

  1. Please grant succor to those who have no means and do not have basic facilities of life.
  2. Let each Human being live in peace and harmony with each other.
  3. Let all species live and prosper.
  4. Let our environment be safe and fit for habitation for all species as Humans have no special rights, others have an equal right to live and enjoy life.
  5. On personal level, let me be peaceful, without ego, greed, jealousy and undue attachment. Let me lead a simple and austere life.
  6. Let me understand purpose of my life and help me to shed selfishness and discover myself.
  7. Let all enjoy good health and inculcate positive habits.
  8. Let my kith and kin learn good values in life, be good humans and useful member of the society. Help them to discover themselves.

I close with an excerpt from SGGS which talks of Universal Well beings of all.

“ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਚੜਦੀ ਕਲਾ, ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਸਰਬਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ”

“ Nanak Speaks; By your Name, Let everybody be in High Spirits and with your Blessings Let everyone in this Universe Flourish.”
