In today’s world many Yogis have started monetizing their skills in a big way. We have read about many God-men working in this area and making lots of money. Many different variations of Yoga have been created e.g Hot Yoga, Transcendental, Sahaj-Yoga etc, however most of us do not understand the essence of it.
As per the Sikh scriptures, Yoga is the complete conduct of life both physical and spiritual. A True Yogi is the one who fulfills his worldly duties and yet remains detached. He/She conducts his life in an honorable manner and ensures that his actions do not hurt others.He/She controls five evils viz, Lust, Anger/Rage, Greed, Attachment and Ego and adopts virtuous qualities like, Truth, compassion, contentment, humility and Love. A true Yogi earns his/her livelihood by fair means and donates part of it for the needy/poor in the society. Indian Saint Kabir whose verses are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) have spoken of “ਭੋਗ ਮੇਂ ਜੋਗ ਜਾਗਾਵੇੰ” implying “Meditating within the ambit of household responsibilities”.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji (the first Guru of the Sikhs, 15th century) while discussing the topic with the famous Yogi Machindranath spoke of qualities of a True Yogi explains;
” A True Yogi is the one who controls the five passions (Anger, Attachment, Lust, Greed, Ego) and does not waiver.
One who practices Yoga in such a way that he saves himself and saves all his generations,
He alone is a true saint who attains such deep understanding and remains absorbed in deepest meditating trance day and night.
He begs for Devotion to the Supreme creator and lives in his fear.
And is satisfied with the valuable gift of Contentment.” (Page 877, SGGS).
May Lord bless us all with such qualities and strength to lead the life of a True Yogi.
